Wondering how to get your dog to smile? You’re not alone! If you've ever tried to snap a photo of your dog just to have them stare blankly back at you, you've probably wondered if it's actually possible to train your dog to smile.
While there are some training tutorials on YouTube, I've got an easier approach you can use right away.
A smiling dog makes for an adorable photo, so read on for some fun, easy tips to help your pup flash those pearly whites on cue. Here's how to get your dog to smile, no tricky commands needed!
Tip #1: The "Sit, Down, Sit" Trick
Here is the surefire way I get my dog, Emmet smiling—and it’s super simple! Start by asking your dog to "sit," then "down," then "sit" then "down" again. Keep it fast-paced, and hand out a treat each time. Keep repeating this until you see a smile. Your excitement, combined with the rapid change in positions, will have your pup smiling in no time. (It could also be the treats... but let’s give the trick some credit, too.)
Tip #2: Teach a New Trick
Instead of teaching a specific "smile" command, focus on something new, like a "shake" or "high five." The novelty of the trick and positive reinforcement (treats galore!) will naturally make your dog smile. I’ve been working on this with Emmet, and every time I ask for a high five, he gets that goofy, happy grin.
Tip #3: Use Some Light Bribery
We're not above some light bribery over here! Classic treats work well here, but you've probably already thought of that. You may have noticed that your dog naturally smiles, ear to ear, when you cook something delicious. Does your dog have a favorite dish? Make it. Sear a steak, poach a chicken, open a can of tuna – hey, whatever works! Once they are smiling, snap your pics and don't forget to reward your dog with a bite.
Tip #4: Set the Scene
Once your dog’s in a great mood, grab your phone or set up a tripod. Ask for that new trick or start the "sit, down" routine again. Snap away while your dog’s smiling ear to ear—mission accomplished!
Now you’ve got a smiling pup and plenty of great shots to share. Try these tips, and let the camera roll!
